Optimizing logistics and supply chain

Tejas Mehrotra, Senior Product Manager at Lambda
When we started using Intersect, its transformative power over our workflow became evident. In a short time, we were able to create a data app that automatically reads the data directly from our database, transforms the data and turns it into a report.

At Lambda Labs, our mission is to accelerate human progress with computation. We provide custom built workstations, servers, and laptops to engineers and researchers at top companies and institutions like Apple, Intel, Microsoft, MIT, Stanford, Harvard etc.

Our customers love us for two main reasons:

  1. Our lead times are miniscule compared to our competitors;
  2. Our pricing is super competitive.

In order to maintain these two advantages, while still making a profit, we have to be extremely data-driven.

On our database we maintain (among other information), an up-to-date list of all quotes we have provided, and all the orders that have been placed – invariably, not all quotes result in orders. Previously, at the end of every week, we would download these lists from our database as CSV files and perform loads of analysis.

For example, our sales team tracks metrics like percentages of quotes won, revenue generated per salesperson, profit margins, and time to close a sale. In theory, this sounds simple, but in practice the nature of the data makes it a tedious task. We attempted to carry out this analysis in Excel, but the weekly repetition proved time-consuming and therefore unsustainable.

Next, we turned to writing python scripts. However there were a lot of problems associated with this avenue: only a handful of people could run the scripts; if the sales team wanted to tweak the analysis, they had to wait for someone on the product/engineering team to make the changes and running the scripts still required a series of manual steps. First we had to manually download the data from the database and then send the data through our scripts. And most significantly, due to all of these specifications,  the sales team could never run the report on demand.

When we started using Intersect, its transformative power over our workflow became evident. In a short time, we were able to create a data app that automatically reads the data directly from our database, transforms the data and turns it into a report.

We were even able to write a custom python block within Intersect to process our data in a particular manner.

It's a win-win.

Salespeople love it because they get to see the metrics they care about. And the product team loves it for its reduction of repetitive data tasks.

This one data app alone saves us no less than 4-6 hours each week and we are already starting projections for expanding our use of Intersect to optimize our supply chain as well!
